  • Beth G. related her story of the stock options v. real estate conundrum as she experienced it (when to hold the options and when to fix the roof!) in “Buy Low, Sell High.” She used Project No. 4 from the Competent Communication manual, Working with Words, as her framework.
  • Dave E., an advanced speaker, spoke from Project No. 5 of The Entertaining Speaker advanced manual, Speaking After Dinner, with “The Day is Over, Our Future Awaits.”

Comings and Goings — Meeting of October 1, 2011

We met for the first time at the  Merrill Gardens Northgate facility.  Highlights:

Lisa’s slide projector
Nicole evaluates
  • Today’s speeches focused on using visual aids (Lisa) and arousing emotions (Scott). Lisa gave a practice run of a speech she will present at a professional conference on diseases relating to international travel, and Scott told a story about his relationship with his grandmother. Lisa presented PowerPoint slides in, er, an unconventional way. . .
  • Ray served as both emcee (“Toastmaster”) and spontaneous speaking session leader (Table Topics).
  • We had not one but two Words of the Day:  “Ferly” (Amara) and “Poignant” (Mary).
  • Evaluators Nicole and Dave E.  gave praise and suggested improvements to the speakers. This was a challenge for each because neither had ever presented a speech based on the manual project involved. But the each did very well because of careful preparation.
  • New member Chris tried out the Timer role.
  • Guest Norma D. from the Northeast Club did a splendid job as general evaluator! Thanks, Norma!
  • Mary took the honors as Best Table Topics speaker with her story of a memorable departure in her life.
  • Next meeting will be at the Grace Kitchen in University Village (2630 NE University Village St, Seattle 98105; (206) 524-3071) See you at 7:30 on October 15th!

Competition Can Be Fun! — Meeting of September 17, 2011

We had a fun meeting focused humor and competition! Guest speakers Vladimir B. and Maria P. tried out speeches they hope to use in the humorous speech competition taking place in clubs throughout the area this fall.

  • Meeting emcee (“Toastmaster”) Dave E.  explained how the contest  works and introduced the guest speakers.
  • Vladimir told us about his joys and tribulations in marriage in “Soul Mates.”
  • Maria described some of the awful dates she’s been through in her quest to find Mr. Right in “Bad Date 101.”
  • After the audience enjoyed the prepared speeches, we had impromptu speaking practice led by Amara D., our Table Topicsmaster.
  • Evaluators Joel H. and Beth G. gave 3-minute evaluations of the two speeches and then conducted round robin evaluation sessions to give the speakers a 360-degree view of their performances.
  • General Evaluator Ray R. gave feedback on the meeting as a whole.
  • Guest Chris decided to join the club! Welcome, Chris!

Business: The club is relocating to Merrill Gardens Northgate starting October 1st. See you there!
