Going to Africa! — Meeting of January 7, 2012

Northgate Sunrise kicked off the New Year with energy and two new guests (Nicole B. and Steve ).  A total of 12 people were in attendance and Lisa led the meeting using the theme “Going to Africa!”  Here are the highlights:

  • Lisa opened the meeting as emcee by reflecting on her travels to Africa and highlighted some resources she had found that document what Africa was like prior to being settled by the Europeans.
  • Tammy gave her third speech titled “Resolve to Exercise”.  She identified exercise as being a common New Year’s resolution and outlined 5 ways that anyone can more easily achieve their goal of exercising more.
  • Andrew delivered his second speech.  He spoke on the topic of how to search for the perfect job.  Andrew pointed out that the most successful job searches start by identifying what characteristics about a job we don’t consider “work”.
  • Our third speaker was Mary who delivered her 3rd speech to the club.  The content of the speech was similar to a speech she had given before, however she incorporated prior feedback.  The results were amazing.  She delivered an engaging speech that painted colorful imagery of how children learn in a kindergarten class.
  • Our table topics winner was Nagisa who revealed to the club that she has a reputation for over-packing when she travels abroad.
  • Nicole C., Amara  and Ray provided feedback to our speakers.  Nagisa and Sonja helped as Timer and Ah Counter respectively, keeping us as on-time and as ah-free as possible. Dave evaluated the meeting as a whole and called all speakers to include “hook” in the introduction of their speech – something that immediately makes the speech about the audience.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 21.

Meeting of November 19, 2011 — Shopping for Food

Beth emcees our meeting

14 people, including two guests (Hao and Larry), joined us for a high-energy meeting on the theme of Shopping for Food! Highlights:

  • Beth opened with comments on shopping for food and introduced meeting’s players.

Sonja shares on not living in Italy
  • Newcomer Sonja F. gave her debut speech (Ice Breaker), entitled “Why don’t you live in Italy?” Sonja says that this is what her relatives and friends ask her when they find out she is married to a man born and raised in Italy, whose family owns a restaurant in a picturesque town. She explained why a seemingly ideal situation would not work from a practical business standpoint.
Andrew tells of his youth on the Yellowstone River
  • Fellow newbie Andrew W. delivered his Ice Breaker, entitled “Seasons of My Youth,” on what it was like to grow up in the rustic setting of Paradise Valley in Montana. Andrew painted a vivid picture of his boyhood growing up on the Yellowstone River.
  • Lisa L. led the spontaneous speaking (“Table Topics”) session with questions on food shopping. New member Tammy won Best Table Topics for the second meeting in a row with her answer on the most interesting item she’s ever bought: pure blueberry juice.
Tammy takes Table Topics twice!
  •  Scott and Joel gave feedback to our speakers and Amara evaluated the meeting as a whole.

Our next meeting, on December 3, is on the theme of The 1980s. See you then!
