Impossible Dream: Seattle Sunrise Toastmasters November 14 summary

One thing has become clear from my little-over-a-year of being a member of Seattle Sunrise Toastmasters: Our club is full of dreamers. Most of us drag ourselves out of bed in the dark on a cold, wet November morning such as this last Saturday, not just because we love the wonderful camaraderie and energy of our club and not even just for the fantastic and often moving speeches. We do it because we all have dreams or aspirations and know that honing our public speaking and leadership skills can help us achieve them. We learn from preparing and delivering speeches, from watching and listening to others speak and give feedback, and from giving and receiving constructive support from our fellow members. Our club is our gymnasium, our workshop, and our classroom, and it is also our dream factory.

As was true at our last meeting, this week our Toastmaster was a fairly new member to our club but an experienced Toastmaster. Tina led us through a terrific meeting with flair and aplomb, speaking from the heart about her admiration for big dreamers like our President Peter and how she’s worked hard to keep her own dreams from being crushed over the years.DSC_1334 copy

We had an exciting lineup of two new speakers and two more experienced speakers, all delivering interesting and compelling speeches.

Our first speaker was one of our newest members, Holly, delivering her Icebreaker, “Never Give Up,” in which she gave us a brief overview of her life’s trajectory, framed by the the series of aspirations she’s had and worked on since childhood–from her early dream (and success) of being a dancer all the way through to her living her dream of being a body and fitness worker, helping others achieve their health and fitness goals. As with most dreams, hers required hard work, training, and sacrifices to succeed. Now she is on her way to achieving a new aspiration: becoming a better speaker. Congratulations Holly! Read more ›

Speech-a-thon: Seattle Sunrise Toastmasters October 17 summary

Summary provided by Valerie:

Saturday’s meeting featured a speech-a-thon! Our speakers for today’s meeting were Abdul, Amy, Peter, Paula, and Valerie.DSC_1142 copy

Abdul kicked off today’s meeting with a speech titled, “Time Management.” Presenting CC #2, Abdul shared with us his own journey from disorganized and chronically-late to punctual, in control, and happy. The catalyst for Abdul’s change was a book recommended to him by a professor, 10 Time Management Choices that Can Change Your Life. That you for sharing your inspiring story with us, Abdul!

Our second speaker was Amy. Presenting CC #3, Amy’s speech was accompanies by a professional visual presentation. The visuals demonstrated the layout and functionality of  an app she developed with a team as part of a class at the University of Washington. The app was for a new business, Fast & Fresh food delivery. Though similar in concept to Eat24, Amy demonstrated that Fast & Fresh offers the user a number of features that take the experience to the next level. Very nice presentation, Amy!DSC_1158 copy

Peter, presenting from the Storytelling manual, shared with us a very emotional story about his childhood best friend, Heather. Heather, a buck-toothed Shih Tzu, was Peter’s constant companion as his military family moved around throughout his childhood. As childhood turned into young-adulthood, Peter eventually spent more time with friends, and less time with Heather, and eventually went off to college. Heather, however, was quite old by this time. Peter had us all on the edge of our seats and searching for tissues as he recounted the passing Heather, who he rushed home from college to be with. Peter reminded us all that we should never take for granted our loved ones. Read more ›
