The Evaluator Role

Each speech presented at Seattle Sunrise Toastmasters is evaluated by an experienced toastmaster.  This feedback provides members with an opportunity to hear what they did well, and what opportunities exist to improve.  The Evaluator compiles and delivers this feedback to the speaker.

Prior to the meeting

  1. Contact the speaker you’re assigned to evaluate; ask which project they’ll present.
  2. Review the project goals and what the speaker or leader hopes to achieve.
  3. Study the project objectives as well as the evaluation guide in the manual.

At the meeting:

  1. Check-in with the General Evaluator; confirm the evaluation session format.
  2. Retrieve the manual from the speaker; ask one last time if s/he has any specific goals in mind.
  3. During their speech – actively listen and prepare an evaluation that provides reinforcement for strengths and gently offers useful advice.
  4. Deliver evaluation
  5. Complete the written evaluation in the manual
  6. Return manual to speaker

Evaluation tips:

  • Be as objective as possible
  • Always provide specific methods for improving and present them in a positive manner
  • Time is short – speak to two or three points
  • The sandwich method is an easy approach that works well – begin and end your evaluation with encouragement or praise
  • When delivering the evaluation, be a motivating force 🙂
